Machete’s Sign: “You’re Not Sad, You Just Need More Tacos”

In Mexican culture, food isn’t just nourishment — it’s medicine.

It’s the way our abuelitas showed love. It’s how we comfort each other when words fail, And sometimes, it’s how we treat sadness without ever saying the word.

There’s a sign you may have seen — a now-viral quote from Danny Trejo, aka Machete:

“You’re not sad. You just need more tacos.”

It makes us laugh, but it also hits home. Why? Because it speaks to something very real: the way our culture responds to emotional pain.

🫓 Food as Love. Food as Therapy.

Holding a thick piece of dough between two hands while making tortillas, this image captures a tradition that's been cherished in our culture for generations.
Holding a thick piece of dough between two hands while making tortillas, this image captures a tradition that's been cherished in our culture for generations.

For generations, our families have healed each other with tortillas, caldo, frijoles, and cafecito. Our elders may not have known the word therapy, but they knew the power of sitting you down, feeding you something warm, and reminding you that you were not alone.

That kitchen table?

That was your first therapist’s office.

And the tortilla in your hand?

That was their way of saying “I love you. You matter.”

🌮 But Let’s Be Real — Sometimes, We Need More Than Tacos.

While tacos can comfort the heart and fill the soul, they can’t always heal what’s happening inside. Depression, anxiety, ADHD, and emotional burnout deserve more than silence and spicy salsa.

Here’s the truth:

• It’s okay to talk about your mental health.

• It’s okay to ask for help.

• It’s okay to have both: culture and care.

You can love your traditions and still make space for therapy.

You can eat pozole and meet with a psychiatric provider.

You can hold your roots and reach out for support.

💚 Mental Health is Cultura.
